AnnouncementIn 2010 I did my first livestream, during 2012 I decided to go more seriuously into streaming
and 2015 was the beginning of GeekyGoonSquad.
What started as a hobby became a responsibility for me and in the end, even my life.
While I did my degree as a computer scientist I formed GGs to be one of the leading Smash Bros broadcasters out there. Being mentioned next to VGBC and ShowdownSmash was an honor for me and motivated me to keep moving.
2015 and 2016 were really rough years for me, having a 40H+ job and running a company like this were super exhausting, even more happy was I to get my degree and also being able to make my hobby to my living.
The last 6 months I tried to live from that, having huge support from Twitch directly, Splyce and a huge amount of savings I was confident this would work out.
Well, it didn't.
I tried to minimize my expensives to somehow work it out.
But at some point I realized, I need to set a limit, like a dead line when I have to understand this would not be the future for me. Putting the subscriber goal to 400 to continue streaming in 2016, being able to reduce this number to 250 thanks to Twitchs help, I also set the deadline to 150 as a total minimum.
This weekend, the number fell under the deadline, now while I'm writing this the sub counter is at 146.
In 2016 overall I consistently lost subscriber, getting lower each month and even events like BEAST, Heir, Syndicate and Eclipse didn't affect the trend at all.
To be exact, February 2016 was the only month I ended up having more subscribers at the end than before.
Additionally to that, 2017 started and the taxes for 2016 are on due.
Also I actually got a surgery scheduled which I can also not pay right now, so I had to cancel it until I actually can.
I am currently actively searching and applying for a job, to be able to continue living and pay my taxes (which I'm currently not able to).
Once I get a confirmation for a job, the project GGs will officially come to an end.
Unless a wonder happens, like getting 200+ subs, a company willing to sponsor me from nowhere or something similar, which I defenitly doubt to ever happen.
I always tried to avoid that, I searched for a sponsor to cover at least some of my costs, contacting several companies, but this always ended in either no response or a deny. Europe is simply not ready yet and I have to accept this.
What will happen now?
At first, nothing. I'll still continue what I am doing since I still need to live out of something, pay my rent etc.
All event which are confirmed to be streamed yet WILL be streamed by GGs.
Once, I get applied, I will finish up by covering the last events confirmed.
Once these are done, it's over and I'll move on.
I am confident this won't affect the european scene too much since there are still
BYO_Controller, SmashHouseUK, ForwardSmash and Salty Playground, providing the future productions (incl Dreamhack).
So I recommend following these channels already in advance.
I am not happy do this step but I need to accept it at some point.
Huge thanks to everyone who supported me and what I did!
You are the real MVP of Europe!
TL;DR: GGs will cover all confirmed events, but quit afterwards.
